I’m looking for recommendations for a less expensive lawyer to do up a simple will and power of attorney. Any recommendations and an idea of what you paid would be appreciated.

Was $500 at Paterson Law last year.

For a medical Power of attorney, you don’t require a lawyer. Click on the attached link on completing a Health Care Directive and appointing a POA.

A financial POA requires a lawyer.

Just recently completed two wills and two POAs at Epp law. Was $850 for both. They were great at explaining all the choices and helping us with wording so the will ages well and we don’t have to continually go back and change it.

Wills don’t need a lawyer. Unless very complicated.  
 
Just write it out in simple language. My brother had a one page will . Named executor. Basically saying after bills are all paid everything goes to “X” and if they are dead it goes to “Y”. Dated and Signed in front of two witnesses. Perfectly acceptable.  
 
Power of Attorney. I would use a lawyer no exceptions as there are different types that assign different powers. And you need to be explained to you by lawyer. To choose best one for your specific needs.

While handwritten wills are acceptable if your will needs to go through Probate it’s best to have it done properly by a lawyer.  
 
It’s also important to update it should there be changes in your family such as marriage, birth, death, divorce.  
 
If your will is old it’s best to update it so that current clauses are i:ncluded. It’s also important that all names in your will have correct full legal names.  
 
POA’s are only active when you are alive. They are so important because once you have lost capacity for any particular reason then it’s too late.  
 
Ask friends and family who they use for a lawyer. Cheaper isn’t always better.
