Disposal of fluorescent tubes

Since the introduction of our new refuse system, I have just now discovered that I have no place to dispose of the 4 foot fluorescent tubes I use to light the workshop in my basement. I can put a couple in my dumpster but they wont stand up, they are too tall and will prop the lid open. I'm not really going to be able to fill up the dumpster without breaking the tubes.
Does anyone have a more appropriate way of tube disposal?
