LCD versus PLASMA

We are thinking of getting a big screen TV (after Christmas, when they are cheaper...lol)....my questions are these.....Which is better and why?, What brand would you recommend?, what store would you purchase from? What "specs" should i be looking for?
Bear in mind i don't want to spend more then $1000 (pre tax) and we would also be using it with a gaming system.
I hope someone can help cause it has confused me to no end.
