What rights does a spouse have?

A friend of ours is currently going through a marriage crises. She was kicked out by her husband. They have two kids. She has a suitcase...yes...1 suit case and that's it. He won't give her anything. IS THIS LEGALLY RIGHT? Can a spouse do this to the other spouse? She has no money for a lawyer. Even though she's in the wrong by having an affair, I don't care. That's not the issue. A woman has been kicked out of her home with NOTHING but a few items. HELP me. I want to help her. Should the police be involved?
