Brandon Police Make Arrests
1/12/2009 at 12:26 PM
After spending more than a month on the lam, two murder suspects have been taken into police custody after being picked up at a home in Brandon late Saturday night.
The two men - Owen Phillip McDonald, 20, and Cassidy Elston Floyd Eagle, 21 - were wanted in connection with the death of 25-year-old Charles Brightnose, who was beaten to death at a house in Thompson, Man., on Nov. 29.
A third man, Kenneth Munroe, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder shortly after the incident, but cops had to issue a Canada-wide warrant for the other two, whom they described as being armed and dangerous.
The men were spotted entering a residence on the Sioux Valley First Nation on Dec. 13, but had disappeared by the time police arrived.
Over the weekend, members of the Brandon Police Service's criminal investigation unit, crime support unit, tactical response unit, crisis negotiation unit and police dog unit surrounded a residence in the 900 block of 10th Street in Brandon, where the suspects were believed to be present.
Cops surrounded the residence at 7 p.m. Saturday, and by 10 p.m., had made contact with the people inside, police said.
After a brief negotiation, McDonald and Eagle surrendered to police without incident. They were taken to the Brandon Correctional Centre.
Brightnose was assaulted in the early morning hours of Nov. 29, and was discovered outside a home in Thompson. He was later airlifted in critical condition to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
An autopsy has confirmed he was the victim of foul play.
