BPS caution drivers and pedestrians to be more aware
4/3/2009 at 10:12 AM
There's been discussion on eBrandon in recent weeks about a couple of pedestrian/vehicle accidents in the city.
Just thought I'd pass along this note from this morning's BPS releases regarding pedestrian safety...
Be careful out there folks!
-------------------
The Brandon Police Service is cautioning drivers and pedestrians to be more aware of each other while walking and driving the City streets. A CompStat analysis of the first quarter of 2009 has identified that there have been eight pedestrian collisions. Motorist are cautioned to be aware of pedestrians walking toward crosswalks or when observing other vehicles stopped at intersections.
Pedestrians are also cautioned that they are required to stop and ensure it is safe to cross the street before they enter a crosswalk or pedestrian corridor. Pedestrians should only start walking when they are sure the vehicles on the street have seen them and are stopping. They should continue to watch for vehicles in other lanes that may not have seen them.
Tips for Motorists:
Slow down when approaching Pedestrian Corridors or Crosswalks.
Watch for other vehicles that are slowing down or stopped at Pedestrian Corridors, Crosswalks or intersections
Do not pass vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians
Beware of pedestrians, especially children that are approaching Pedestrian Corridors, Crosswalks or intersections
Tips for Pedestrians:
Ensure that vehicles have seen you before leaving the sidewalk
Indicate your intention to cross the street (Hold out your arm, activate the Corridor lights)
Watch for other vehicles that may not have seen you as you start to cross the street
When crossing at a Pedestrian Corridor ensure to activate the overhead lights on both sides of the street
Walk on the sidewalk at all times
At night wear light colour & reflective clothing
