Canoe for Cancer...
Jack Clarkson and Gerald Hoggarth have stepped back in time to raise money for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and Cancer Care Manitoba.
They began a journey by canoe from Buffalo Pound Lake in Saskatchewan and will paddle their way to the Forks Market in Winnipeg.
No easy accomplishment, but when you consider that Jack is 79 and Gerald is 68 this is an absolutely amazing journey.
They began May 1st and spent May 22nd and 23rd canoeing and visiting with family enroute from Miniota to near Oak Lake, Manitoba.
They have been tried and tested by cold weather, wind, snow, rain, and hail, but their good humour is still very evident. Their journey has been sponsored by The NorthWest Company, but they travel as in days of old with no support on shore....just them against the river and the forces of nature save for times when people along the river extend a welcome or a meal or family and friends track them down and share an hour or two.
There has been no fanfare and no lining of river banks with supporters, but I hope we in Brandon will come forward to greet them, meet them, and show our support for them in this most worthy cause.
Cancer recently claimed a brother from Gerald and Jack's sister is battling cancer now, so the cause for which they are working is most definitely real.
I will be following their progress to Brandon and then on to Winnipeg and ask that you watch for further photos and information as to where and when you can come down to the river to wish them well.
If you would like to show your support you can do so in person or by cheque payable to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue RM 0N1160, Winnipeg MB R3E 0V9.
