Street crossing, children and the cars that don't stop!!!

Now I know a rant is a rant, but this one bothers me because it has to do with kids.
I don't know if its just me, but has anyone else noticed in the city how no one stops for pedestrians-or better put - kids at street junctions. It makes no sense to me why someone would have to walk numerous more blocks in order to cross a street at a crosswalk just to cross the road.
My beef is with drivers that do not stop for children. Now for myself as an adult - cars can see me, even if I have to step out on to the street to show my intention to cross, however these are not the same antics I teach my children when wanting to cross the street.
We always say to stop at the corner and wait for traffic to stop for you before you cross - however, this hardly ever works.
One day as my child went to school I watched them wait at the corner for 5 minutes while cars continued on their way - I had to go down to the corner where my child was, step out on to the road, wave my hands and then cars finally stopped - ridiculous!!!!!!
I understand that school is nearing the end for the year, but for all of you drivers out there - please be aware of our children who wait at the corner tops of streets to cross the road, we don't need to hear about a child being hit.
Be aware of the little ones!!!
