Community Spirit
7/12/2009 at 12:49 PM
I have just returned from Calgary, and of course the Stampede was on. This 10 days must be the epitome of Community Spirit, not seen anywhere else in the western world. Companies large, and small, local community groups, and chartable organizations hold Western Breakfasts every day.
You never have to go without during the western festivities. The oddest invitation to join in fellowship, and sausage with eggs was organized by the Prostrate Cancer Institute who along with offering a free breakfast included a free rectal exam for any man over 40 years who was in that frame of mind.
In Brandon the nearest we come to this outpouring of Spirit is every weekend during the Garage Sale season when thousands of our citizens follow the three “H’s” Hustle, Haggle and Haul away. At this time all the different ethnic residents drive, cycle or walk to engage in social intercourse with each other.
For many transactions the only language is sign language, not the official ‘signing’ but a generic variety spoken when different nationalities wish to communicate.
Winnipeg may be the Slushee capitol of Canada, but we are the Garage Sale capitol of Canada, any way, it sounds better than the Dandelion Capitol.
