Guidelines to cash amount for wedding gifts?

I know it will vary with how well you know the couple, but I'm out of loop so much, I haven't got any clue.
$50 - $100 ish range depending on your relationship to the couple or the parents? is $50 too chintzy these days?
Any recent experiences you care to share?
