Opportunities for Brandon Youth
7/28/2009 at 11:37 AM
My belief is that most of the young people of today lack motivation and self-confidence. They have either been told for their entire lives that they "can't" do something, or they have been given everything their entire lives for free so why bother working for anything?
It seems that what we forget as we get older that young people need opportunities, not just to be swept under the rug or dismissed as "these young people of today!". We need to remember that one day, we as adults will be out of the workforce, and it will be the young people that we see now taking our place. Will they be ready to keep society running? or are they going to say it is "too much work" and go back to their video game? They are our future.
This seems a little scary when you see young men with pants so big they could put 3 or 4 people in them, with their underwear showing and their hats on sideways. Not to mention our young ladies with low rise jeans and short, tight t-shirts with a 2 inch hole in their ears from their spacers, and several holes in their faces from repeated piercings. YIKES. But if you look past the horrid fashions - there are some terrific young people there - hidden under bolts of cloth and behind 2 inches of metal.
Our youth of today need a hand up - not a hand out and there are opportunities for them! We, as adults need to be positive role models for them, not bank accounts. Young people need to learn the sense of accomplishment of a job well done, or of the first big paycheck.
We need to do them a favor and cut the apron strings before it is too late. Get our young people out there and into the work force....make them believe that they CAN live their dreams - but that it doesn't come from making it to Level 4 in their latest video game.
I guess this plea would go out to parents and to employers as well. Help them, so that eventually they can help us.
