Buyer Beware

This weekend we answered and ad posted in the eBrandon classifieds - nothing against the classifieds Adam, just want to make people aware of what happened with us with this particular ad. It was a guy from Kenton that had a silver 2000 Malibu for $2600 so we took the drive out there to check it out. We took it for a drive and it overheated less than a mile out. My man is a mechanic so he checked it out, made some adjustments and away we went. There were some minor mechanical problems that we expected since the price seemed quite low for this vehicle. My bf figured out what it would take to fix the problems, haggled on price to compensate for repair costs and off we drove with what we thought was a decent deal. On the way back to Brandon we encountered a few more problems and discovered when we got home that there was no antifreeze in it and the motor would most likely need to be replaced. This man told us he had sold the car to a girl and she didn't like the way it handled on gravel so they traded for another car he had and he was selling this one. Before we even got home we got a call from the girl telling us that they hadn't completed their deal yet and she didn't actually have a car from him and was upset that he had sold us a car that was still hers. We did see the signed agreement acknowledging the trade but were unaware that it hadn't taken place yet - this information was not given to us. When we told her we couldn't do anything with the vehicle until she signed the TOD she calmed down a bit and started to give us more and more information about the car. The seller also did not inform us that it was a previously written off vehicle. When we called him today and told him about it needing a motor we gave him the option of taking the car back and returning our money or refunding us the amount it would cost to put a motor in it. His answer was we could drive the car back out there and he would give us our money back less $200! We returned the vehicle and he eventually did refund the entire amount after we pointed out that he had sold us a vehicle he didn't legally own yet. We were lucky we didn't get stuck with this car through his shady dealings and don't want anyone else to be blindsided either.
