Hope in a hopeless world

Just recently I had an opporunity to spend a week in New Orleans working with an aid organization helping build houses for people affected by hurrican katrina. While I was there I saw great things happening, a community coming together to rebuild (yes the rebuild is still going on). But what I also so was a lot of pain from people taking advantage of people who are down and out. Mostly corrupt contractors stealing from people who are in a vulnerable situation. I got to thinging since there is one end of the spectrum, there must be the opposite end who wishes to be hope.
I read of countless situations of our hopeless world (especially on ebrandon) and ask you the public this question. How do you be hope in a hopeless world?
This isn't meant to be a debate about faith/ religion, I just want to know how you provide hope to those in what seems like a hopeless world at times?
