Midway Rides...are they safe?

Hi. I'm just thinking about this since the accident in Calgary last night where 10 people were injured, 6 more seriously. I remember seeing that Scorpion ride at other Fairs and it's something I never went on. My mother always felt such things weren't safe as they take them apart and put them back together so frequently...perhaps they could leave out a screw or whatever. I did go on the Zipper once (convinced Dad, lol) and felt I was in some kind of tinker toy...definitely cured me of such rides for life. I've heard of other people seeing rusty nails and such on other rides...
Anyway, how do others feel, any bad experiences or do you feel the same-different?
The best article is from the Calgary Herald:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/Calgary+Stampede+ride+breaks+injured/3288824/story.html How about that poor family from Saskatchewan...yikes. I cannot imagine the mayhem that followed. What's really scary is that the person operating the ride wasn't even aware of any problems. I don't think this speaks badly of the Stampede, they sure have had a lot of hard knocks this year, but the Midway company.
