Where to exchange money?!

Does anyone know where I can exchange currency without belonging to that specific bank? I recently moved to the city and all I still bank back home. I plan on heading across the line in a week and need to get american currency, but when i tried at one of the local banks they told me they are unable to unless i belong to their bank.. Any suggestions?
