Racism: That was uncalled for!

My boyfriend and I have just recently moved to Brandon from Fort Frances, ON. We are both native but I have pale skin. So, we were walking around the block just to get a feel for the neighborhood and right on the corner of Victoria and 13th and some dude in a red Ford were stopped at the lights and randomly yelled INDIAN at my boyfriend. They were not natives so we were thinking it was meant to be hurtful. I am just wondering if we should expect more of that sort of thing or if it just happens once in awhile. My mother, who is also native, has had some incidents with some guys in a roofing company truck honking and gesturing at her. Is this sort of thing normal around here?
