Brandon's changing demographics
2/27/2007 at 8:45 AM
Gleaned this from the City's Recreation report... in it they chart the proposed demographic changes in the city from 1998 to 2025:
Age group % change
0-14 -27%
15-64 +0.4%
65 and over: +38.8%
and then for the entire province:
0-14 -17%
15-64 +4.1%
65 and over: +46.9%
It's not hard to explain the biggest reason behind the trend (aging baby boomers) and one would have to presume that unless you're Calgary this is going to be a pretty common thing.... but what ways do you see our aging population affecting the city?
You're starting to see some effects already with the large new seniors housing complex going up at 1st & Victoria. Part of the beauty of this venture is the proximity of the complex to the hospital.. which is one thing that as people age does seem to be on their list of priorities.
