BRANDON HANDI TRANSIT
3/3/2007 at 12:16 AM
i know most of the people on e brandon will not know what i am about to talk about but some of you will. 4 years ago when i started dealing with handi transit it was run fairly well run there were a few mistakes but not many . they had 21st century running along side of brandon handi transit, to pick up there overflow of trips. then things got worse when 4 way taxi got the bid for a 3 year contract.no longer were these indivduals with special needs, they became trips from point A to point B..... i booked handi to take an individual to a dr's appointment and then he was to go to work, but 4 way took him home. they never listened to the person , just dropped him of at an empty apt.this gentleman needed 24 hour care and was left alone in an apt for 2 hours. and there were times when 4 way showed up 45 min early and wanted to take the individual early because it suited their needs. or they sat down
and watched tv for 40 min.or the time 4 way didn't strap a senior into her wheelchair and she went flying out of her chair and broke most of her teeth off. i could go on all day about 4 way . those are just a few examples. next we have when jeff rozier wanted to charge disabled people " thr more they used the handi system they used the more they paid" that was quoted in the paper . the individual that i take care of would of paid 800.00 to 1000.00 a month for the transit system. the charter of rights states that you can not single out a group of people unless it is to the benifit of the group. we all went down to city hall and voted against it. now 4 way is no longer part of handi transit, they gave up their contract with the city. now the city has handi transit completely and it is no better. you need 24 hours notice to book a trip and that doesn't mean you will get to go . i had a trip booked with my individual, i phoned back and changed the destination but kept the same times..the next day my individual was all dressed in his winter clothes waiting at the door for a 6 pm pick up...6:30pm no handi transit.. i tried to get through on the phone, i couldn't until 7pm... now he's been waiting for 1 hour in his winter clothes. i tried to get him to take them off so he wouldn't get hot , but he refused .this goes on all the time..constantly i finally got through to the person on call and there was no record of him being on the schedule.. so now they have to try and fit him in because someone removed him from the schedule.. my individual is not only physically challenged , he is mentally challenged. now he is starting to get very stressed because he might not be able to go out , as planned. which means a lot to him because he does not get out very often. this happens far to much. in order for there to be improvements the city has to learn about their clientell.. some individuals will take their frustration out on staff and become physical, some will throw things at staff or other homemembers, or will self mutilate. i bet the city doesn't think about that when they miss a trip or an hour late to pick someone up. the people in the office that sit and crunch numbers should be out in the bus and helping with the trips to see what goes on, on a daily bases, instead of trying to fill their 2.4 trip per every 15 minutes. this is a government funded city service , that just got another 1.3 million from the government.i don't think the city cares about the quality of life of the individuals that they serve because without them they would not have a job!
