Bill C-15B - Updated Animal Protection Laws

To: House of Commons
Justice Minister Martin Cauchon,
We, the undersigned, are signing this petition to encourage the passing of Bill C-15B. This bill is an amendment to the current Animal Cruelty law which carries a punishment of only $2000 or six months imprisonment. This law is outdated, and as a society we must take action to promote the humane care and protection of all animals and to prevent cruelty and suffering. Bill C-15B will allow for tougher sentences, including unlimited fines, longer jail terms and lifetime bans on animal ownership.
This is not intended to be used to persecute farmers or hunters. Instead, it is meant to appropriately deal with individuals who are cruel to animals and take pleasure in inflicting suffering upon them. There is mounting scientific evidence of a link between animal abuse and violence against people.
In light of the recent animal cruelty cases before the courts, this law obviously needs to be updated. The Toronto Humane Society receives approximately two thousand calls a year of suspected cases of animal cruelty. It is hoped that by passing Bill C-15B, people will be deterred from abusing animals.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
