The small hostel at Maryland and Broadway has moved to a much bigger location ! They're now at Kennedy and Ellice - sort of behind Portage Place (the former Downtowner Motor Inn). About a 2 minute walk to UW to the west and Portage Place to the south.  
 
It's across form where I work so I thought I would go check it out.  
 
They've really cleaned the place up. Kept the pub (which is great !) and restaurant but got rid of the vendor which was 90 per cent of the problem with the old Downtowner Motel.  
 
The rates are super cheap for a downtown hotel. Below are rates for members of Hi Hostel. For non members it's $4 more for shared rooms and $15 more for private rooms. As someone who has lived and worked in the area for years I can say that they're in the midst of a great project here. The pub and restaurnat anre all cleaned up. They have security and limited access for non-visitors. The only stipulation is that you cannot be a Winnipeg resident to stay there. Note that it IS in the downtown so if Downtown Brandon gives you the heebie jeebies then downtown Winnipeg is not the place for you.
