YMCA to withdraw from the proposed partnership
9/28/2007 at 11:29 AM
According to the press release I recieved in my BU email this morning. I'm assuming this is in the wake of the falling ceiling grate.
BRANDON, MB - Last evening, a resolution was passed by the Board of the YMCA to withdraw from the proposed partnership with the City of Brandon and Brandon University.
After 16 months of work on the proposed joint facility, the YMCA has determined that there is an immediate need to improve their facilities. We set out to test the idea that ‘together we are better’ by operating jointly out of a single facility. That means being able to offer more services with fewer resources. At the same time, each organization is distinct, with a mandate and community it serves. In trying to serve those communities, with their differences and commonalities, it has become apparent that we are better working separately to enhance each other than in trying to work as a single combined entity.
While there were differences in philosophy that precluded us working together as integrated partners, we will work separately to create a mosaic of facilities that will serve the community as a whole. The university has as its primary responsibility the education of its students, including their physical well-being, the welfare of its faculty and staff and its commitment to athletic participation at the highest levels. Our community needs facilities that are dedicated at these goals and are consistent with the quality infrastructure of our partner universities. We will continue to work with the City and the YMCA to serve our constituents and the community at large.
Thoughts? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
