The School crossing on Victoria Avenue and 20th, Street.

When Fleming School was closed to local students, they were transferred to Earl Oxford School. Local parents created uproar because they were afraid for the safety of their children. In answer to this the School Division assured the public that everything in their power would be done to enable students to cross Victoria Avenue with out fear of harm. At the start of the transfer, there were two crossing guards, and a bevy of police at the crossing. Then the Highways Department installed traffic lights, so that over the last couple of years we have had a crossing guard on each side of the divided Avenue and traffic lights. Today it would appear that the School Division has researched the situation and the threat of an accident at this crossing has minimalized enough so that it only requires one crossing guard to stop traffic on both sides of the Avenue and control children and University Students alone. How long will it be before the School division will decide that the children and drivers, automobile and semi, will be knowledgeable enough to use this crossing safely, or do we have to wait for an injury or worst to happen before we find out that the School Division calculations were incorrect.
