In railway speak the extended whistle is saying someone or something is on the tracks and it's a warning to get out of the way

So you are saying you sleep better with long train horn blasts. Nice to hear something positive about the trains for a change.

Perhaps it was a tactical diversion. Bet you didn't notice the 14 other ninja trains that snuck through at the same time.

It was inconsiderate of them to lay a railway near your home after you purchased it, that's for sure.

I like trains. I also know this town grew up around the railroad.  
 
Yep it was here first. The long whistles today was simple over kill in my opinion.  
 
It seems to me engineers have a wide birth re whistles. Certainly how long and loud. The sequences are based on what is happening and what they are approaching. The engineers need to follow the rules. The length etc may be a discretion some abuse.  
 
Maybe it is time to crack down and automate that decision making. I would hate to see that.

Yes. Every train conductor goes through all that training to be able to blow there horn on Saturday morning's. We all know there secret now.... But seriously, maybe there was a car on the track, someone crossing, for all you know is that long whistle just saved someone, maybe there was animals on the track that they didn't want to hit.

I do not think that conductors lay on the horn just a little longer just to piss people off... I am actually surprised how many threads there are complaining about train sounds near their home. If you can't stand it why buy a house near tracks?!? They were there long before the houses... Just something I do not understand...

near 26th at Brandon Ave. It's kinda like "if I am up at this hour, so are the rest of you" attitude. This has to end!

The train goes right thru Oak Lake and blows the whistle all the way.  
As with Virden, all the houses on 5th & 6th  
hear it.  
I guess with time you get used to it.

I like to leave my window open at night, even though we're blocks away from train tracks. The trick is though to get yourself a fan, and a radio or both and drown out the noise from the trains at night or early in morning.it works..Because these people got to work too.We can only guess why they blow they're whisltes but Im pretty sure its not because we're sleeping..LOL So just drown out the noise...and have a good sleep.

The length and volume of the horns are mandated by transport Canada and the engineer has no control or choice of use except in case of obstacle on tracks  
 
There are no tracks with in 75 metres of the hospital and since you probably noticed the lack of mountains run away trains are extremely rare. the last one I heard of was over 20 years ago in Minnedosa, it ran down the Manitoba escarpment and stopped some where near portage. The biggest danger was that with out an engine or engineer it failed to activate any crossings or blow the warning horns  
 
There are no drunk engineers though occasionally they fall aslepp  
 

What the city planners have to realize is the original city planners had brandon started where cornwallis park now is across from the rcmp station and when the railroads planned there depot where it currently is they moved the city to its so we can't complain as for the hospital issue the original builders chose to put it there knowing there was a mainline right there. This is just like the old build a new subdivision a mile off the end of a active runway then whine and moan about the airplane noise

Theory you are perfectly right and most of them do it like they suppose to but every once in a while one of them goes totally off the deep end and I doubt that there is animals or what have not on the tracks all trough the city. As for the noise at night when they building trains in the residential areas or park the engines there all night running and rumbling - well my favorite quote of some is that the railway was there first - true but back then the trains weren't as long as now - and if they would move out their yard every time they extend the lengths of the train then they wouldn't block the crossings or building the trains in the middle of the night in residential areas - I know the tracks were her long before but that argument is getting really old in my opinion. Put up some noise reducing walls in the residential areas and you have a solution to avoid hitting people crossing there the same time

I don't think laid new tracks by your house, I would believe they built a house by the tracks more.

very smart comment - maybe it would help too if it was posted clear when you move to an area like that that apparently noise bylaws do not apply to railway . I.E they can shunt all night or keep trains idling wherever they want - at least that's what my counselor told me

My sister was in from out of town & said " What the heck was that ???! " I said "What was what ?? " My grand daughter said.... " Oh...it was just a train Auntie ".. I didn't even notice it...lol

I believe the way the transport Canada act is written it would be up yo the city of Brandon to erect and maintain noise attenuation barriers and the rail roads participation would be entirely at its own discretion and since they own many thousands of miles of tracks I believeb they would opt not to participate

It's my understanding, by law, they need to blow their horns whenever they are about to cross a railway crossing - lesser whistles if it's a controlled crossing Barrier and lights), more and longer if it is an open crossing.  
 
That said, the other night (early morning, really) that conductor held his hand on the whistle switch from one end of Brandon to other. Overkill and no need, whatsoever. That person should have a complaint lodged against them for such behavior.

Where the crossing has lights and barriers, the railroad can stop blowing the whistle if asked but whoever requests this (in this case the City of Brandon), but the city would have to pay for insurance, which it has been reluctant to do in the past. There are six crossings between 6th and 13th streets, three with warning lights, on the CNR track and every train blows the signal six times. Some engineers make it short while others blow the two-one-one signal for a full block. Sorry to say, you gotta live with it but you get used to it.

I'd also like to point out that is the minimum that is required for horns. It's also required when people are seen on or near the tracks. As a railfan, I cannot believe the number of people that I see walking on and across the tracks in Brandon, especially in the CP yard.

They are not meant as an alarm clock to anyone...  
They actually have to blow their horn before every crossing to warn people they are coming.. They don't do it for a laugh.  
 
If you don't like it maybe you should move to a country house or a small town that has no trains

Yeah I'm pretty sure, like everybody else said, the train tracks didn't get built behind your house recently. There are also laws for the horns and when/where/why they get used. If you don't want to hear train noises at all hours of the day I suggest you don't buy a house close enough to a train track that this is going to cause an issue. Move waaaaaayyyy out in the middle of nowhere and you'll be able to enjoy a quiet, restful night devoid of all train horns. Don't live in a city built around a railway line.

Im pretty sure it is against the law to walk over the tracks in the yard. Well it used to be when my dad worked there many years ago. It is private property after all and they are trying to prevent unnecessary accidents.

Maybe they saw somebody walking on the tracks or some wildlife was near by. Be thankful CN only goes 10 miles per hour if that in town. You're not going to see a 'quiet zone' in Brandon anytime soon so get used to it.

Get used to it, trains must blow the horn at evey crossing. I used to live in river heights with the train behind my house and got used to it. Maybe you haven't been effected by the lose or injury of someone, and I hope you haven't. And maybe you haven't known an engineer who has been a part of such an accident. I can assure you it is horrific and ANY precautionary measures are welcomed. Furthermore maybe some of you have not been outside in early morning lately and have not seen the fog or smoke from up north make visibility awful. No matter what you think, you weren't in the train, don't be so swift to complain.
