and makes a person not even bother to make their yard pretty. Im sure some "bored" kids thought it would be funny to take it. And then probably dump it on someone's else's yard across the city. To many people growing up without a conscience. Besides I hate when the honest, hard working people have to learn the lesson that we cant leave anything outside or unprotected.

My husband and I have spent a lot of money and done a lot of work trying to make our yard look better from when we've bought it. Yes, it's only $7, but it's the principle. It was mine and on my property

I had this happen several years ago. They were ornate hanging baskets I had found on ebay, bought and paid for. Hung them up and thought...gee, I hope nobody steals these. Next thing I know, they are gone. Now have the hooks closed so they can't be stolen. So upsetting.  

I had a bird feeder stolen...when we first moved into our home. It was within a few days of putting it up.

You'll be surprised that most of the time, it's not about money or lack of. It's a mental thing. Even celebrities were caught shoplifting.

In my many years of service I received numerous calls for items taken, smashed or simply tossed in other peoples yards.  
When I dealt with these individuals who did the senseless crimes all the responses to why were pretty much the same "My friends told me to do it, it seemed fun at the time, It wasn't that expensive, or the best is the wouldn't miss it"  
I made sure when I caught the ones involved, they wrote letters of apology to the persons property they damaged (I also had a copy for my file), they paid for their damage and I also had them do some light yard work for the people (the hours I selected would have been varied on the damage they caused), then if the did not comply with all that I set out for them that was agree by myself, the parents of the accused, as well as the victims I would send them to court. I usually had good results that way, parents did not want to always take their kids into court.  
I am sorry that someone damaged or stole something that to them may have been nothing, yet to yourself it means alot.

Some times its not necessarily a Crime of Opportunity / Personal Gain. Its a crime of Bragging Rights. Or as I call it, Crime of Douchbagery.  
 
Its a sad and pathetic thing that this happened to you. Sometimes, people have nothing better to do with their time then be morons. (And we all have morons in our life, TRUST ME) The issue is that there is zero accountability from the person committing it and zero accountability on behalf of their parents. I remember when I was younger, 2 kids lite a local hill on fire. (I am not from here) and the general response was "Oh well, kids will be kids" not the response that should be given.  
 
But I will say congratulations to you D.H.. Its good to see that somebody has managed to get results and deal with the issue in a positive way. :-)
