i hope the police can find your jewelry...start with the pawn shops? and dont forget to make an insurance claim if you can.

If the police have filed a report, call the police and speak to victims services. You should be able to go against the parents as they are responsible for the acts of their children. Sorry that this has happened to you and your family.  
 
On another note, I worry about the girls who have so little compassion and or remorse for their actions. I have a 7 year old granddaughter who has a greater sense of right and wrong. As others have said, these children need to be evaluated and their home situation too. If 11 is too young to baby sit they should be supervised closer. Call CFS to start getting help for them or this will be start of a long hard life for them.  
 
You seem like a caring person, willing to help them out, so don't delay these girls need help

Beleive someone would bring up "spanking" as a remedy and cure all for kids "bad behaviour". Should your boss or supervisor "spank" you at work for poor performance or decision making? Or should they bring you in for a discission in their office? Kids understand and can benefit from discussion and consequences, no need to bring out "dad's strap" or "mom's wooden" paddle to make a point. The only thing that does is let you the parent blow off steam while conveying to the child that violence is a way of making people do things your way. "The good ole days", sheesh!!!! To the Op, if the parents are"blasé"or not even present as appears to be the case, then CFS must be called. Hopefully the parents or guardians understand the severity of the kids actions and will take approppriate action such as curfews and limited time for favorite activities as a consequence of their actions.also performing yard work for you would also be a good consequence for them. Strap or wooden paddle would simply harden these kids even further. Goodluck!

People from that generation that got spanked..and believe it or not they didn't turn into little assholes and actually have respect. It's this new age thinking that is messing up the kids!! Call CFS? YUPP that's the answer. Kids have to many rights.kids laugh at you and your discussion and consequence...what are you gonna do? Take away their x-box?  
 
Curfews and doing chores that they should be doing anyway as a punishment? Pfffft I can hear the kids laughing already.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act does not allow prosecution of a child under the age of 12. Period.  
 
This is not a police issue, this is a legal issue. If we don't like the laws, we as citizens need to be contacting our MP's and complaining!

that leaves me to wonder if the police did pick up the girls and take them to their parents like they would if they were caught stealing at walmart? if they didnt why not?  
 
just because they cant be charged doesnt mean there is nothing they can do

I'm sure there are things that can be done, however that is pretty much the extent of what the police can do: drive 'em home and give 'em a stern talking to.  
 
I'm as frustrated as the next guy, but the police are the bad guys here. The guardians of these kids are the ones that should be "doing".

I remember, I must have been about 9-10 and I stole a sucker from a small store. My mother made me return it with a note of apology. I had to go sweep and mop the floors of the location well wearing a sign 'Don't steal', after that, it was embaressing I never thought about it again.  
Unfortunitly laws are different now when it comes to disipline. I know I learnt my lesson many years ago by good parenting. I will never forget that. My mom said 'thiefs go to jail and are marked there entire life. This is just a lesson hopefully you will learn from it'  
 
I am so sorry this has happened but unfortunitly kids are free to do as they please the law has guarded them so well. without good parents ready to teach them right from young they will not learn.

but when an adult does something wrong his/her name is printed in the paper so why should this be any different. I would want justice too, no matter how old the child is. If you do an adult crime, you should face an adult charge!  
 
Very sorry for the invasion of your space and security. I hope you get your sentimental possessions back too.

They should be watching pawn shops.  
Also you could likely sue the parents in civil court but it sounds like the parents are likely unable to pay.
