Why do landlords need you to give a date that your moving before you find a place to move? What if you give a date and can't find a place before that? I figure the standard one month notice works but I need to find a place before I know when I'm moving, right?

Most people don't move unless they have a place to go? I'm kind of confused by your statement.... You told your landlord you were moving, they probably paid to advertise, searched for a potential new tenant, and offered them the place your living, and now you want to say never mind I haven't found a place leaving a potential long term tenant homeless just so you can stay another month?

He knows we want to move but expects us to give him a move out date before we find a place to move to.

I would never leave without less than 30 days notice. I need that much time myself and it's not like he will have a hard time filling the apartment.

Landlords don't need a date that you are moving before you have found a place. Once you find a place, and know your possession date, then give the landlord your months notice to move.

If you give your landlord notice on August 30 that you are moving on September 30, and then you have no place to go, that is your fault, not the landlords.

Well it's good to know that I don't need to approximate a date and then scramble to find a place by then.

would even mention that I was thinking of moving out until I had an actual date. Since its obviously going to panic the owner into ensuring he has a renter in place. Maybe that's a plan for next time. lol
