get in touch with the person/company that sent you the cheque. If it's made out to you then anyone else would have to have your signature on the cheque before they could cash/deposit it. I know things are a lot different than when I used to work at a bank but the person/company should have a stamp on the back of the cheque to know what bank and who cashed/deposited it. Maybe a banker will give you better info tho

The cheque even has a no third party deposit stamp. The problem is that it was put through CIBC who also allows PC members to use their atms. The CIBC said they can't help, the company the cheque came from has to wait for the police to finish their investigation so that they can get the cheque sent back and reissue me a new one.  

Stealing Mail is a federal offence. Get in touch with someone from the victims crime unit.

For future reference, any time something like this happens, immediately call whoever issued the cheque and tell them to call their bank and stop payment on it. That can happen very quickly.

I didn't find out until after it had been cashed. I had been calling asking where the cheque was for over a month, the final time they were like oh... It's been cashed. Love how all these "security measures" are good for nothing.

Maybe I'm completely confused, but how can they not trace it back to who cashed it? You have to put your card in, if the account number isn't cibc contact pc... I just don't understand how it's the hard to find out who cashed the check, take the money back (it wasn't there's) charge them, and give the money to you....

I wish it was that simple. I thought the same thing until this happen. But because it's personal info the police have to do the paper work and wait on the bank to release the information. Even though I dunno how many People with the same first initial and last name live in the area seems like that should be enough but it's not.

If that comment was directed at me sorry to tell you I don't watch tv but honestly the person committed fraud! It ridiculous it takes so long.

I think they probably meant Victim Services, which is indeed here to help victims of crime in Brandon. I don't know what American TV has to do with anything.

Sorry for your loss and frustration, OP.

Two cheques were stolen and cashed by the same bank I used to bank with. I alerted police, called the cheque issuers and alerted bank. The people who issued the cheques said there was no way that was my signature endorsing it. Bank wouldn't do anything (even though a cheque falsely signed with my name went through another persons account and the bank had my signature on file). I called police multiple times but "they couldn't prove anything"

What if someone's spouse cashes a cheque in a non joint account?? Is this legal or illegal?? Without the spouse knowing that is

This is why I fully support the movement by Canada post to implement community mail boxes. They are so much more secure than the hardware store version stuck on the wall by your front door. The community boxes have locks on them and you cannot just sneak up and steal someone elses mail. Yes they can be pried open with the help of a crowbar or something but that has to be done in plain sight of the public.  
 
Stop the crime before it ever happens. Then it doesn't matter what the bank or the police can or can't do.

I definitely think that places with multiple occupancies should have this regardless. Told my landlady this as the their was my neighbour. And yes any cheque cashed not by the proper person is illegal. It's fraud and theft

And this is why very soon all government cheques will only be issued by direct deposit.  

Not all cheques are from the government. Some are pay outs from other things. Either way kinda ridiculous that a banks clearing house personal cannot read.
