I have noticed more and more people using their cell phones and clueing out to the rest of the world. I have watched people walk through the mall parking lot without even looking up. It is the drivers responsibility to watch for them but the pedestrian also has a responsibility to be wary of their surrounding.  
I have a dash cam and shows lots of people driving talking and texting with their phones and not hiding it like they know the police wont do anything about it. I have recorded someone driving all over the road only when got beside noticed too busy texting to drive.  
I guess cell phones are a way of reducing the population.

Let's face it, nothing is going to change until the government starts taking it seriously and imposing much stricter penalties.  
Manitoba boasts about their strict drinking and driving laws. So treat drivers with cell phones the same. The TV ads are not going to make a difference.  
As for the pedestrians, just don't have an answer. Maybe if they fall into an open manhole.....no, they'd probably just take a selfie.

That see on a daily basis is mom or dad walking 20 ft in front of theirs kids as they walk to school - texting away. And I see it every day....  
 
Not really sure why people have kids these days if their mundane, stupid text and facebook updates are more important than talking to the kids as they walk, interacting, enjoying the company of the one they are with.

It saddens me to see what the cell phones have done to society, basically created a generation of people that soon won't know how to interact with other people face to face. It amazes me how many people miss real life as it passes by because they're so busy looking at their phones.

What possible penalties do you suggest to these criminal cell phone companies?  
 
Should a sensor be put in that the phone not work when in motion/ in a car or trying to be used by walking and bikers?  
 
Spaghetti in my opinion this is user error. There is a on off button for a reason. We can not fix stupid nor blame the maker of the phone or the cell provider.

Until data speeds and cell coverage gets to that magic 100% coverage and the Siri/Google etc servers are good enough to actually make google glasses and whatever Apple option comes along a seamless, non frustrating experience. It's a thing that will only get worse, or better depending what side of the conversation you're on. It'll be like when blue tooth headsets first came out and you'd see those people walking around talking loudly to what appeared to be themselves.  
 
its not going to change, it's such an integrated part of everything.

....what can be done by the manufacturers.  
 
I made the comment I did for two reasons.  
 
First, placing responsibility on manufacturers of products known to cause harm is common place. Tobacco companies and the big three car manufacturers will attest to that.  
 
Second, and I think the more salient point. The OP, in the very title of the thread, has alluded to the common place nature of threads of this kind and I simply sought to offer a point of view that I have not yet encountered. ( it may have been brought up in the past and I missed it)  
 
We always get the inevitable posts like the one offered by foxtrot11 dismissing others actions as "mundane" and or "stupid" even though they really have no way of knowing the import, or lack there of, of what people are doing on their phones. (The "I don't do it so it must be bad" mentality )  
 
Or a version of the inevitable post like that offered by Alexander. The one that discredits entire generations, groups of people, cultures, and/ or societies.  
 
As pm5k has aptly pointed out. These things, smart phones and the various gadgets associated with them, are here to stay. As such, if they are truly causing havoc then we, as a society, are within our rights to put at least some of the onus on the manufacturers to ensure they can be used safely. I will leave the form and function of what they do to them and the regulatory agencies involved in such things.

There has been successful class action lawsuits against tobacco companies even though it is a personal choice whether to smoke or not.  
 

I see more and more younger people with cell phones. My question is WHY. Are they so important that they must be in constant contact with their peeps or are their parents so insecure that they need to have constant contact with little Johnny or Johnnette. Life does go on even without social media. Most people are not that important they need 24hr contact with the outside world (yup believe it). I myself dislike the cell but must have one when on call.  
Cell companies make it easier and easier for the whole family to have a phone and even advertise it that way. But what is it doing to the family unit. Mom and Dad eating while kids are eating and staring at a screen. Yeah so much family interaction. I seen 4 friends sitting at a table and they are only texting whatever happened to socializing face to face.  
I heard people sit overnight waiting for the newest phone WOW get a life.

I thought of that as well, but the difference is that tobacco, consumed in any form or manner, is hazardous to your health and that of people around you. Cell phones, on the other hand, have legitimate, non hazardous uses. Like was said in an earlier post, it's user error causing the problems.
