BSD weighs catchment area changes  
A redrawing of school catchment areas may mean that some elementary students in the city could have to move schools next fall.

Does this mean studnets living in area of Riverheights/King George will have to change from their school, to make room for outside studnents? Doesn't sound fair.

lots of people use others addresses to get there kids in a school of there choice we know of several that use grand parents addresses to get there kid in a different school should perhaps crack down on this

Just the kids bussed into the schools from other areas being reviewed.  
These schools are overcrowded so kids will hopefully be assigned to other schools. At Riverheights specifically the numbers are the highest of any school and they take kids in from Brookwood and the 9th street area and not certain if more areas. They also get the Valleyview 7 /8's and have the Lifeskills program which requires space besides being an open concept school already incondusive to large numbers for noise transfer. They have classrooms taking over key areas, this year an art room was lost and kids seem to be losing gym time with the addition of more classes every year. It is a crowded school, coat racks even line the main hallways now. The playground is overcrowded. The parking is difficullt and denagerous with such high numbers of kids and staff. Bus zones are tight and lined up. Not sure about King george but a change at Riverheights is much needed.

When I registered my child at river heights I was required to show proof of address, had to bring in a current utility bill that showed our first/last name and address

Regardless of a students catchment area, for years now the BSD had a School of Choice option where parents could actually opt to have their child sent to a different school within the BSD that was outside of their catchment area. This is the first year in a long time where the BSD has apparently put a stop to that.  
 
Now before anyone goes ripping my head off for that above statement. That is first hand information I was told by a teacher within the BSD.  
 
Could the school of choice option in my opinion helped contribute to over crowding in other schools, most definitely.  
 
There have been talks within the BSD for 20+ years that a new school was going to be built to help accommodate this over crowding issue and help create smaller class sizes, sadly that's all it worked out too, was just talk.  
 
I strongly believe regardless of where students end up going, the city just needs a new elementary school made. The odds of that happening are slim to none because that doesn't seem to fall into a "top priority of things to do" category.

We definitely need a new elementary school; either in Brookwood or off 9th street south. There are so many young families there now and they are all bused around town. Hopefully the city considers this in the near future!

We need another school but this is not a decision made by our Board of Trustees, that's the government of Manitoba. To help alleviate the problem though they are looking for yet another band-aide fix. Eventually the box will be empty!

Yes another school is needed but even once approved will take years to build. In the meantime, the two over capacity schools need to redistribute buses of kids coming in asap. In AB our friends kids have been shuffled to new schools a few times based on controlling numbers. Unfortunate for the kids but focusing on education.

Maybe it is time for us parents to have our say with the province. The School Board has been trying to got a new school for some time now, what if the parents got involved? I agree with the band aid fix... and I think that the box is going to be empty very soon.

In the meantime...after finalized...and built....maybe several years off so the meeting is still an important event to attend. And then high school troubles are next unless they ate hopefully thinking about that now too.

Only in timing, it's been obvious for a long time Brandon needs another school.

I would assume it would be somewhere near Crocus/Riverview curling club.

A new school is a long ways off. An election with a possible different government may stop this. Add to this that it took them almost 1 1/2 years to build additions at Waverly and Meadows. So how long will it take to build an entire school 3-4 years?  
Once the ground is broke then talk naming.

All the new school is at this point is a political promise. Green Acres was promised a new gym 5 or maybe 6 years ago. I don't think the ground has even been broken. In my opinion 3 to 4 years is overly optimistic for a new school.

I find it so funny how everyone is excited about a "new school" being built. Come on people it's an election promise and won't mean a bloody thing when the NDP get voted out in April !!!!

True however that's what our MLA is for. Whoever gets elected contact them and demand that this promise be upheld.

Have the new catchment area's been decided for the 2016/17 school year yet?  
Would be nice to know how we will be affected pretty soon.....
