Wondering if anyone knows average hanging weight price per pound for pork? Not including cutting and wrapping, reason I'm asking is wanting to know what to sell pig to customer for

A quick check of market prices for October 24th put dressed prices around $1.70 per lb. you might be able to ask for a slightly higher price depending on the market you are selling to (farm raised, organic,).

There was a farmer from the Neepawa area which was advertising pork sides for sale not cut and wrapped, which I emailed him stating I would take 4 halves. Everything was a go, I was to go a evening to pick these halves up and got a email stating that legally he could not sell the pork to me anymore, but I could pick up the live pigs and take them to a place that process live animals. Wasn't worth it for me in the long run. Not sure if this is the norm or not

I think that no one is allowed to sell any meat that has not been killed in a inspected facility, now that being said I think that a person can perchase an animal (which transfers the ownership) and then the animal can be slaughters in a non inspected facility, like a farmers yard, and different rules do apply. In coming years this may even come to change, which would cause problems when hunting wild game, if you can't kill and dress out a cow or pig or foul without health risks to your family how would a person harvest and process wildlife or birds safely.

Red tape... everything has to be inspected so no direct to consumer sales unless facility is approved by goverment.btw I have pigs booked into a goverment inspected plant for dec.processing.

Are you still allowed to kill and process an animal for yourself, I know with cattle home farm kills are still allowed and animals can be transported to inspected facilities for processing, but only for ones own use and not for sale.

Yes you may kill your own animal & take it in for processing...altho not everywhere will take it.  
 
We sell pigs for $1.50/lb LIVE weight, then it goes to East 40 for killing & to Obermaiers for cut & wrap (which you pay them for & can be done as you wish)  
 
You cannot buy a pig (or cow or goat) from me & slaughter it yourself in my yard...you have to take it home alive otherwise we are an abbatoir.  
 

We sold our pigs for $300 each and then delivered them to the butcher. Then our customers paid the butcher for the killing/cutting/wrapping. So for approx $500 someone could get a whole pig

Thanks for you input, I'm always looking for loop holes in some of the red tape that gets put up, and am wondering if a person has a area that was rented out for a period of time to the owner of the animal and has a signed contract for the area would that not mean that the animal was slaughtered on the persons property, sort of along the lines of renting property out for someone to grow a garden on or park their camper on for the winte.

I'm sure many people would love to find that loop hole!

When you think of it, if you are doing a few it's actually easier to take them to East 40...no guts to dispose of properly etc. Not that many do it properly I'm sure.  
 
Maybe in time it will change as more people want to buy from a local farmer but also not everyone knows how to kill/butcher properly anymore....so I wouldn't want them killing the animal improperly (especially when we do know how to do it)

I found East 40 expensive. We took our pigs to Prairie Rose Meats in Souris. Flat rate of $50 for kill and disposal.

I guess it depends on where you live too...East 40 is MUCH closer to me than Souris & I haven't found them that expensive...it's a price per lb.
