i am a stay at home mom and looking for a fun way to make a little extra income and i was just wondering what companies are there to become independent consultants for?

There's so many from purses, to leggings, to food, make up, health things, and cleaning supplies. Depending on what your hobbies and likes are will dictate what you might want to do.  
 
I do know people who have done this and they really don't make a lot of money (you have to put a lot of effort into it...).  
 
But if you listed some things your interested in I'm sure more people could help you out.

Serious question, is there anything that a mom can actually sell at home that isn't just stuff to try to sell to other mom's who do the same thing so they have cash to buy nick nacks from their friends?

Far too many of these sales companies are Multilevel marketing systems which is just colorful language for pyramid schemes.

Ensure you do research on the company prior to signing up for anything, you don't want to end up as that pesky friend who pesters their friends to buy from them.

From what I see on this thread is a bunch of MLM positions. Those are the worst things that I have found and told my wife she is never to get into these things......anything with "host a party" or "friends and family will love it" to pressure them to buy is not my cup of tea. With income tax coming up book keeping services are probably an option for some. Doing income taxes. I know I wouldn't want to be working to be paid in costume jewelry or beauty products. I am curious to know those selling these products and services....counting all the time you have spent into the business. How much per hour would you say you are making?
