1st street bridge

So my curiosity has the best of me. I drive over 1st street bridge every day. I can't seem to see why one pillar is so much higher than all the rest. I was wondering if there is a drawing of the design somewhere Or hey e Brandon if anyone knows why this would be please fill me in

I see two possible reasons:

The plans include significant flood mitigation features that would not be present in a "normal" bridge.

Or the other pillar is not complete.

it's going to be much higher and the road will be level with Rosser. On the other side the road will be raised to meet it. So with the raised road, the flooding of 1st will be reduced.

The matching raised part looks to be now is now in the process of being made.

That will also mean new entrances to Dinsdale Park and Optimus Park will be needed to meet the raised level of 1st.

Makes sense. It sure will be a raised level.
If it is as high as rosser I'm guessing there are plans also for pacific

beams will sit on the lower pylons, plus the road deck on top. Those are going to be some massive beams!! Also presuming there are new height and design requirements for going over railways.

Via the city link below, intent is to switch traffic over to the new span tomorrow and then move on to demolishing the old bridge so that they can get started on the second new bridge:

clearances as far as minimums go has not changed much in the last few decades.

what they have done is flatten out the profile of the bridge. Oh and they are Girders not beams, beams hook onto girders

they really didn't do crap to the bridge to prevent flooding. raised the bridge in general and made the bridge approach steeper. they really didn't raise the bridge/approach in the actual area where it would be needed to help protect it with flooding. just think, last time it flooded they had to sandbag the entire area near the turns to the soccer field/park. bridge is back to same height at that area which would have been the lowest area before they started.
very interested to see what happens at pacific though. it is gonna require either alot of changing to pacific so it gets up to the new bridge height or no more pacific access.

point out ghat the flooding on 1st St would need more than the bridge to prevent it. Last time ghe water covered a good part of 1st street itself (and remember the sandbagging and fort required to keep it open in 2011? The flood problem there has little to do with the bridge!

I'm pretty sure that the 1st St. bridge didn't need to be raised because of flooding concerns. Was the water level anywhere close to the bottom of the bridge in 2011 or 2014? I'm guessing that there was 20 feet of space??? Raising 1st St. itself will help with flood control.

Did anyone notice the water levels under the Thompson bridge during those two flood years? There wasn't much room left. Less than a foot? If the water level would have gone up much more, the water would started to back up and then there would have been real problems.

A Couple More Possibilities...

Now that the southbound lanes and bridge will be closed for awhile, they could build up the southbound lanes of 1st Street, from the dike at Kirkcaldy to the new southbound bridge, to use as a dike road. Then they could also build up and or extend the dike under both of the bridges, along the north bank of the river. As an alternative, they could build up the gravel road through Dinsdale Park to become a dike road and part of the dike along the north bank of the river, extending under both bridges. I'm not saying they will do either of these, just that they could.

Where are you getting your information, johnnoon? So what is resting on the concrete columns? The bridge consists of a series of parallel BEAMS resting on equally spaced concrete columns. And yes, the regulations for clearance under railway spanning bridges have changed significantly over the past several years, so have the maximum slopes for bridge approaches. The plans for the 18th Street Bridge will probably surprise some people! In fact, Pacific Street between 1st and 2nd will now be permanently closed.

Actually, the approach to the new bridge is much shallower. If you look, the connection points along First Street have been extended significantly over the old bridge.

As of a few min ago, traffic is now flowing both ways across the new bridge. They had opened up Northbound a little sooner and then stopped traffic Southbound for about 10 min while they dotted final i's and crossed final t's. Traffic ended up being backed up almost to the top of the hill (see pic) and assume quite a ways down Kirkcaldy... but worth the wait to be part of history

Keep in mind with the new setup that there is no direct access to Pacific when traveling Southbound... you have to use Princess

I have been asking over and over why the new bridge is higher than the old bridge - there still is no answer I can see.

Flooding has absolutely nothing to do with it. If the floodwaters ever got that high, we had better be building an Ark..... not a bridge.

Not sure where your info on pacific is closed for good comes from but the plans for tender and the last ones I seen,pacific will still tie to first. Just no north bound off Pacific

They Shouldn't Block Access To Pacific Completely...

I hope so. I don''t see a problem with allowing southbound traffic from 1st Street to turn onto Pacific. East bound traffic turning south on to 1st Street from Pacific shouldn''t cause a problem either.

A plate girder is a girder that has been fabricated by welding plates together to create the desired shape.

rail clearance diagram is 22' you are correct, as published May 14, 1992 (TC E-05)
