adam posted a photo of two of brandon's largest homes..does anyone know who lives in these two homes? must be a large family

I think for privacy reasons it would be best not to ID either Home owner, but they really are quite impressively big places to find back to back in the same area!

Without naming names, because really no one needs to plaster their names everywhere for privacy reasons. But ones a doctor and ones a developer.

FWIW, if the data on the City website is correct these two homes combined contribute North of $46,000 (annually) to the city tax roll. If considering that at tax time the city sets the tax rate based on the amount of money it needs to collect then technically the taxes of all other properties in Brandon are less than they would be because these two homes are on the tax roll. If its said that every 400,000 in new expenses for the city results in an approx 1% tax increase then you could rationalize that taxes are somewhere around 0.1% lower because of two homes.

With that I do not understand how new housing and commercial development doesn't offset the increased city costs. I just pulled up the 2017 budget and if I am wrong correct me. The budget difference was 900 grand. Say new average build in the west end seems to have taxes in the 6 grand mark. 150 new homes would make up that new budget increase. Why does everyone's go up. That I cannot understand.

I agree they are very big and probably look amazing inside!!! But look at the yard. I think a house like that should be on at least 10 acres of land!!

I'd say that's a bit of a leap. I don't know about you but if my goal was to show off I could think of a few more showy areas to build that aren't quietly tucked away at the edge of the city. Possible they just want more space to live in and have the means to make it happen?
It's said one shouldn't spend more than 30% of their income on housing. I can say with quite a bit of confidence that if my income were quadrupled I'd probably at least double the space we live in........ but admittedly I think the tax bill would scare me off of getting too ambitious (call me cheap!)

the one house doesn't exactly have much of a view, either into the back of the other house or view of the dairy farm.

for attention but at least they are a little different from the ubiquitous cookie cutter 3 car garage with attached house houses that are being built these days.They are all the same boring style with maybe a different colour siding and a few different flowers/shrubs in the yard.If I had that money I would use it to renovate an older home with some character.

Well, to start with, every house in a new development comes with additional infrastructure costs: new streets to plow, more garbage to pick up, etc. I don't know what percentage of a home's taxes go where, but it's definitely not as easy as new house = more money for the city.

I agree that these houses would be much better suited for an acreage. There are some really nice large homes in the surrounding area's of Brandon. Just head west on Richmond and there are a couple that are very appealing on their larger portions of land.
We don't know why these people chose this specific neighbourhood, because it just seems like a strange place to build that kind of home. Although, there is a school close by, and it is one of Brandon's nicer neighbourhoods for sure.

There is another very large home in that same neighbourhood right at the end of Park Avenue as well, and I believe there was one being built in the East End somewhere as well, just a couple of blocks of first street. If we look around Brandon though, there are several large homes closer to Brandon's downtown area that obviously belonged to Brandon's elite few back in the day. I'm sure everyone back then also thought that this people were just looking for attention as well. No different for these well off families now that have built extremely large modern homes I suppose.
