I agree that these houses would be much better suited for an acreage. There are some really nice large homes in the surrounding area's of Brandon. Just head west on Richmond and there are a couple that are very appealing on their larger portions of land.
We don't know why these people chose this specific neighbourhood, because it just seems like a strange place to build that kind of home. Although, there is a school close by, and it is one of Brandon's nicer neighbourhoods for sure.
There is another very large home in that same neighbourhood right at the end of Park Avenue as well, and I believe there was one being built in the East End somewhere as well, just a couple of blocks of first street. If we look around Brandon though, there are several large homes closer to Brandon's downtown area that obviously belonged to Brandon's elite few back in the day. I'm sure everyone back then also thought that this people were just looking for attention as well. No different for these well off families now that have built extremely large modern homes I suppose.
