Can anyone help me identify this big ugly caterpillar? It was found here in Brandon. It's a pale greenish brown with white spots along it's sides and an "eye" on top of it's rear. It's big and knobby and pretty gross. Just wondering what it is. Never seen one like this before.

my thoughts said "Ash caterpillar   Have them on our ash trees - not good "

All that I can find with a similar name is an ash cone leaf roller caterpillar. Nothing else came up when I searched "ash caterpillar." Is that what you mean? If so, they will not kill a tree and do not warrant spraying so say many Alberta tree/city arborist sites, so if your caterpillar is one of those, it really is nothing to get worried about. They will do ash leaf mining & leaf rolling in their life cycle.  
 
I had trouble finding a good picture.

we see them in our grass every year, start off bright green, then turn tan or brown.

Thank you for all of the help! We don't have any trees in our yard so I'm not worried. Kids are keeping it for another day and then will set it free. Blah. Lol

Google Tomato Hornworm. They start off green and then turn a pale brown/fleshy color. I've these in my moms garden before. Yuck.
