Hey. Was wondering if anyone can tell me how it is not discriminating against pot smokers to have the age to buy it 21, but alcohol is 18. This seems like blatant discrimination of a large segment if the population if MB. R alcohol drinkers better people than pot smokers?

This is the proof. Taken from the Canadian charter. Pot smokers r equal to alcohol drinkers. These r the founding principals our country was built on. Making the age 21 to buy marijuana is discrimination without a doubt

You have to be 16 to have a drivers license. So does that mean as a person who drinks alcohol I was discriminated against for two years of my life? I'm not 55 so I don't get a seniors discount. Does that mean I'm being discriminated against? I'm not sure this is a valid use of the word.  
 
Also, your brain doesn't stop fully developing until 25 so maybe 21 isn't a bad deal after all.

First off do you have a link to the new Manitoba marijuana laws? Other provinces have drinking age set at 18. I guess we are all discriminated against. Why can't I legally drink at 14 if I want to? Provinces are allowed to set their own laws and regulations regarding things such as this. I don't get a seniors discount, I don't get a grand off my new truck cause I am not a costco member, not a CAA member...no hotel discount...OMG DISCRIMINATION!!!! I have seen many under 21 smoke and judging by their maturity level and posts like this maybe it should be 25 or older so they can mature a little more.

First what does a license and alcohol have to do with each other? U should get one with the other? Two, discounts for seniors is about lower income and extra expenses for health after retirement. We r talking about 2 drugs that r being compared. One that some people don't like because they were taught not to, one they do cause they like it and consume it. U r talking about 3 different things acting like they can b compared. Alcohol and weed r comparable. One drug should not and can not get preferential treatment just cause the people making the decisions like alcohol. Thats not democracy, that's called fascism

We live in a world where people are killed because of their race, sex and religion. Don't bring discrimination into this because you want to get stoned instead of doing your homework.

The consumption of alcohol, ingestion if narcotics and obtaining a drivers license are NOT rights. Each can be taken away from you at anytime should your behavior require it.  
 
Human rights are about discriminating against a person based on the exact things you listed in the Charter. How does setting an age limit of marijuana discriminate against your human rights?  
 
Are smokers therefore discriminated against?

I'm 43, not 15. Discrimination isn't about race. Supporting one kind of discrimination but not another is idiotic. All discrimination is wrong. Not to some people i guess. Alcohol is just as bad. How many people assault or kill people while drunk? Our courts are full of people who have committed crimes while drunk. So are our jails. It is the biggest drain on the Justice system in this country. The criminal records people get from these charges affect their whole life. Not saying pots better, but the similar and should be treated the same. Obviously some people on here think THEIR drug is better. It's not. Some people don't want everyone to b equal huh? Some of u r better than the rest of us. All I'm talking about is equal treatment for 2 different drugs and 2 different groups of people. That is what our country is about equality. If u don't get that maybe u should move to North Korea

The province has the right to set age limits on smoking, drinking, driving, firearms, fishing, wearing seatbelts, etc.  
At no point are your rights being infringed upon or the rights of 18 to 21 year olds. You might not agree with it...so what.  
I don't think 16 year olds should be able to buy cigarettes but that's my opinion, it certainly doesn't infringe on my rights as a Canadian.  
 
Why would a 40 year old man be so concerned about getting 18 year olds high?

The first half is about equality under the law, meaning when making laws they have to be equal. equal for all, rich, poor, man,woman,young, old, white, or any other skin color, alcohol drinkers and pot smokers. My right to my drug of choice is equal to your right to your drug of choice. Making laws that r harsher for pot smokers is not equality it is discrimination.

You are going nowhere with this. You''re definition of equality and discrimination is bizarre.

BTW, your last post contradicts the "discrimination isn''t about race" comment that you made earlier.

Sorry, I don't see pot smoking!

My point being that just because something is a law doesn't make it a right.  
 
Why aren't you pissed off that your 5 year old can't get a drivers license and driver themselves to to pre school? Is that discrimination?  
 
Maybe little junior should be able to buy his own damned cigarettes! Isnt that discrimination?  
 
The purchase and consumption of alcohol is not a right but a privilege. It can be taken away from you based on your actions. The government had the job of setting the limits of that privilege as well as minimum drivers age, age of consent and many other issues.  
 
If you don't like it, I suggest you contact your member of legislature to discuss your options or maybe even run in the next election to get the minimum age requirements removed.  
 
Hell, if Trump can get elected, I don't see why you can't....it is after all, your right to try.

“My right to my drug choice.” Please link the paragraph from our charter of rights and freedoms that lists that as a right. Thing is, it’s not. Your argument is flawed, and therefore invalid. Many posters have said it, why are age limits set on many other privileges we have...look at the US where the drinking age is 21. Is every American discriminated against?

There is a surgery on all government choices including legal age of pot use. Have your say it will make a difference!!

If 10 percent of our grade 12 students drank alcohol every day, we would be calling it a major problem. We have names that shun people for drinking alcohol every day and we have programs to help them.  
 
On the other hand, 10% of our grade 12 students report that they get high every day, but society wishes to avoid the issue. We have one of the highest levels of drug use in children in the world, but we have no serious efforts to stop this problem on the table. Sadly, many people don’t even consider daily use of pot to be an addiction!  
 
Our biggest problem isn’t 18,19, or 21. Our first problem is getting our addicted children the help they need right now.

Did you try to go for your drivers license at 12 and were told you had to wait till you were 16? Did you say discrimination after? Did you try to get into a bar at 16 and got denied? And call discrimination? Who cares? Nobody. Because it’s not discrimination, it’s the law, deal with it,

Greg, the age of 21 was chosen based on data from medical research.  
 
Do you give medications that are contraindicated under 12 to toddlers because you feel it's discrimination?

That was the only question I had, or post I had in this thread....perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but never called people idiots for discrimination. Not sure if that was directed at me, all I posted was wanting a link.

We all have an opinion, but it always boils down to the simple fact that alcohol creates depression, loss of occupation, fights, deaths, (lots of death) family break ups, oh and a lot of money to the government! As well the interlock ignition program that you have to have if you receive a DUI charge. Dollars and deaths. Alcoholism. Yes I know we don't all have alcoholism nor are we all allergic to peanut butter. My point is the ones allergic to peanut butter can join each other on Friday at 5:00 and sit around the table and have a great, meaningful group discussion, with a jar of peanut butter sitting in the middle of the table. You put five alcohol users (alcohol is a drug) around the table on Friday at 5:00 and see how the conversation goes without that drink in hand. They can't do it. Alcohol is needed for most just to tolerate the reality of mutual conversation. All of a sudden you can admit things you wouldn't admit when you didn't have that first or second drink. Those who despise pot and are against it are the ones who take offence to my last comment. Up the drinking age to 25. Why are DUI statistics not improving? Why would they want to improve when it's all cash money toward Our insurance providers and the government. Keep selling it. Make more stores, deliver it, allow it in new places. Good job who ever gets these gross rules passed. They are the ones who cannot go a weekend without a drink. Because it takes them out of reality. Just like pot does. If there was a 25 year sentence for your first DUI charge for example: do you honestly think those who have a problem and are drinking and driving will stop? Likely not. It's an addiction, an allergy, a problem that ends lives. We are focusing way to much on pot and the legal age. 21, 25, whatever. If youth want it bad enough they will get it and if they are old enough to buy it but have no interest in using, all the respect to you.

This couldn't be further from the truth. A group of 12 of us from work go out for drinks after work every Friday. Once upon a time two of us forgot our ID so instead of going into the lounge we sat in the restaurant and drank Pepsi and water. Even the other 10 who could have consumed alcohol decided to stay sober that night. We still sat there for hours and had just as good of a time.

The OP stated that making the legal age for marijuana is 21 and that this was age discrimination and cited the Charter of Human Rights.  
 
You talk about alcohol being addictive and bad.  
 
What does the one have to do with the other. Don't hijack the thread with useless and possibly inflammatory and erroneous information (all alcohol drinkers are addicted? Really?)  
The only comment that had any merit was "Up the drinking age to 25" but that's for another thread.  
 
We are "focusing on pot and the legal age" because THAT is what this post is about.
