Does anyone "Pay for what they get" anymore?

This thread isn't really to be a rant, more of an observation.
Do people still believe in paying for quality these days? It seems more and more these days that every thing we say we "need" has to be purchased at a lower quality to save a few bucks. I was raised to believe that you always pay for what you get, and if you are willing to settle for inferior product or service, you are actually throwing your money away. And chances are if you can't afford the right item, you likely don't need it anyways.
In these days of a "throw away" society, does anyone believe we can get back on track? With large retailers and outsourced/imported goods flooding the marketplace, is there still room for the guy that wants to provide a product or service that is of high quality? Whether it be automobiles, electronics, appliances, furniture, computers, etc: when did it become the norm that "the cheapest is the best deal"? When did we all decide to settle for products that will work for a short period of time, and then simply be discarded instead of fixed? When did we decide that it is ok to hire the cheapest guy for the job instead of the right guy for the job? Is value completely gone? These are just a few of the questions I have been asking myself lately, what do you think?
