My little family had decided to go camping next week (joys of being on mat leave lol). We don't want to go into the park. What are some good campgrounds around?

McCreary has a nice campground. We stayed there a couple years ago on Canada Day long weekend. It was quite and not busy remarkably for that weekend. We took a couple day trips into the park.

Souris, Minnedosa ,Killarney would be 3 fairly close places  

Ditch lake, Thomas Lake, Sandy Lake...those are all minutes from the park.

Sandy Lake and Erikson are very close, Minnedosa isn't too far away. Does Thomas Lake have a campground??? We have a family cabin there and I've never heard of one.  
I think Onanole has a campground.  
 
Salt Lake (Strathclair) is about 45 minutes away.  
 
Souris and Killarney are not close to RMNP.

There is Sportsman RV park and Onanole RV park. We have not camped at either.

Everyone for your input. I got the feeling that sportsmans rv wasn't tent friendly? (My tent trailer is being fixed right now). I just find it really expensive to camp at the park... Approx 50 a night

Neither Ditch Lake or Thomas Lake have campgrounds. Erickson, Sandy Lake, or Onanole would be the 3 closest to Wasagaming. Camping in the park is around 30-35, not 50.

Is that including park fees?

No it doesn't include park fees. Onanole RV is $47 a night, it is outside the park but it's more for campers not tents. Also there have been issues with bears lately. Erickson is a great campground for tents, I think $25 a night with onsite bathrooms and showers that are well looked after and in good condition.

I know you said near RMNP, so this is a bit off topic, but we just got back from St. Malo and in the more open area, called Sunset Shores there was a lot of tents! One group had 7 tents setup. Brand new washroom/shower facility in that section this year.

yeah its hard to find campgrounds now that have tenting sites.... not to say there arent but we are trying to find new ones that we havent been too. It seems like most campgrounds are now catering mostly to campers and seasonal sites.

Stargazer, that would mostly be the difference between private owned campsites and ones we all own, government campgrounds. So, if you go to the MB parks website, you will see what is around Manitoba. http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/index.html

Yes you do. A few years ago it was free to encourage park use. Here is the quote from website. "The 2015 Park Explorer Pass, for annual park entry, is now available through Conservation and Water Stewardship offices as well as numerous retail outlets or it can be purchased on-line through our partner CanadaMapSales. Shipping and handling charges will apply." Cost is $40 for a year. Maybe someone you know has a pass you could borrow for a weekend?

i meant to say we do actually have a pass already. We have been to William Lake frequently, and this year alone have been to Spruce woods, Rivers and to Aspen Grove Campground near Oak Lake. We are trying to find new places to go and try out. We have family pics in Clear Lake on Monday so we thought maybe camping near there would be a good idea. We just dont want to pay to stay in RMNP as its $20 a night just to be in the park, plus then camping fees.
