Planning on attending the performance at Rainbow Stage in Winnipeg next week. Have you been there? Anything we should know before going? If you stayed in the city overnight, where is a close hotel? Most of our stays have been in the south end

Stayed at the Hampton(s) on main just south of portage for Garth Brooks. It was clean and nice and reasonable price.

Anything close to Rainbow is probably a non-starter.  
 
Maybe one of the Canad Inns in Transcoma?

Can't help with a hotel but if you're looking for somewhere to eat, try Blondie's on Main Street. It's been showcased on "you gotta eat here". It's not a fancy place at all but has the best burgers, hot dogs, fries and milkshakes around!! Milkshakes aren't cheap though so ask for the price first!! Portions are HUGE though and a $6 or $8 burger is plenty for the average person and an order of single fries for $5 is plenty to share with your date!  
 
If you go, give yourself enough time though as it's not a fast food place!! It's quality ingredients and takes time to cook

Canad Inns is generally a safe bet. There is one on McPhillips Street about 10 or 15 minutes from Rainbow Stage.

I grew up in Winnipeg, and I wholeheartedly agree not to stay anyplace close.  
 
Parking is atrocious at Rainbow Stage. Be prepared to walk. You're covered but outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather (and mosquitoes, depending on the time of day).  
 
Yes, CanadInns are generally a good bet. I think there's one on McPhillips attached to the Casino. You could scoot over from there pretty easily too.  
 
You have a decent choices in the core too. Downtown to the stage is about 15 minutes during non-rush-hour (straight up Main St). Inn at the Forks is apparently amazing, and the Fort Garry is interesting. There's also a Hampton right on Main Street like another said, it''s fairly new.  
 
Whatever you do, don't stay at the Green Briar Inn.
