It’s that time of the year, Brandon Firefighters have taken to the roof of #2 firehall to camp out as part of a unique fundraiser for local charities. Between Wednesday afternoon and Saturday a group of four firefighters at a time will brave the elements day and night, eating and sleeping on the roof top in an effort to raise funds for Cerebral Palsy Westman, Muscular Dystrophy and the Brandon Firefighter Charity Fund.
To raise funds firefighters will be accepting donations in front of the firehall at 13th Street and Queens Ave over the course of the fundraiser, beginning at the start of morning and running until darkness. Other members will be setup at different intersections throughout Brandon.
While camping out overnight in weather at this time of the year in Westman is never a walk in the park, it was close to being that much more of a task this year. A major winter storm passing to the South will not quite extend as far as Southwestern Manitoba however a heavy snowfall warning for up to 20cm is in place for an area that includes Steinbach.
While temperatures have moderated over the last few days, Brandon is forecast to see wind gusts as high as 60 km/hr later today that figure to create challenging conditions along with an overnight windchill of -11.
By the time all is said and done the goal is to raise $40,000 for the charities.
