A lesson in pedestrian safety from the most unlikely source

Posted by Adam in Driving, 3/16/2019

A video taken a few weeks ago in Riding Mountain National Park is getting quite a bit of attention nationally for showing a group of our oh so polite Westman deer crossing the road in the most orderly fashion.

In the clip captured just outside the Wasagaming townsite near Elkhorn Resort by area resident Kyle Berg, a group of at least eight deer is seen crossing highway 10 in perfect single file making use of the crosswalk that was put on the road for circumstances not unlike their own (press play below to watch):

According to Berg the same group of deer is seen around quite often but this is the first time he’s seen them giving what amounts to this level of example of how, where and when to cross the road and safely make it to the other side!

Pedestrian crossings are a frequent topic of conversation in the forums on here with the general consensus seeming to be that safety is most likely when both pedestrian and vehicle live up to their end of the bargain in being aware of surroundings and acting in predictable ways at predictable spots. For those looking to further brush up on the topic, MPI maintains a Pedestrian Safety page at https://www.mpi.mb.ca/en/Rd-Safety/Vulnerable/pages/pedestrian-safety.aspx
