The first major piece of the “Back to the River” plan at the Riverbank Discovery Centre is now ready for business, it was announced today. Festival park, which includes an amphitheatre with elevated stage and seating for up to 3000 people in addition to picnic areas, is now taking bookings for all types of events.
Going forward the area figures to be a major local gathering place. Events already scheduled in the future include several charity walks/runs, a citizenship ceremony, National Aboriginal People's Day and local Canada Day Festivities.
Being mindful of lessons learned in recent flood years, the stage has been built at an elevation above the 300-year flood level. While visitors are able to use the area that’s been sodded with grass, its asked that in the short-term folks please not walk on the newly seeded area while grass comes in.
As part of fundraising efforts, naming rights are being sold. A name rights sponsor is currently being sought for the stage and seating areas.
