The Town of Rivers will be the site of a new three storey, 30-room hotel as per an announcement Saturday from Steel Creek Developers.
When construction begins it will take place at a site on the North side of Highway 25 to the East of Columbia street where the town’s old arena once stood. A representative of the company has told me that targeted opening is less than eight months away in early January... a timeline that would have it in operation in time for the town’s hosting of the Scottie’s Tournament of Hearts provincial women’s curling championship later that month. The 30 rooms are said to have varying layouts.
It’s said the project will be owned by a group of investors local to the area.
Steel Creek Developers bills itself as a developer of hotels and active adult living with a focus on small prairie towns. The company last summer completed the Souris Hotel/Murray Building, a combined hotel/active adult residence in Souris. They earlier this year began construction on a development in Grenfell, Saskatchewan that includes a hotel, banquet facility and apartments.
Unlike the Souris and Grenfell initiatives, the Rivers project is intended to be a standalone hotel. A continental breakfast will be served to guests though there will be no restaurant or lounge in the building which is in close proximity to such options in the town.
Rivers in the 2016 census was recorded as having a population of 1257 compared to 1119 residents in 2001. 2011 saw the opening of the Riverdale Community Centre just a stone’s throw away from the location of the soon-to-be hotel.
