Former Brandon Wheat King star Brayden Schenn scored a key second-period goal to help the St. Louis Blues to a Western Conference Final-clinching 5-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night in St. Louis. As Western Conference Champions the Blues advance to the Stanley Cup finals where they will take on the Boston Bruins on the game’s biggest stage.
The goal was just the second of the playoffs for Schenn as centre of the Blues’ top line with Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko.
The Blues also feature Brandon-native Joel Edmundson, who after 11 points during the regular season has played an increased offensive role in the post-season with seven points in 17 games. His four in the Conference Championship series tied for the team lead amongst defensemen.
The appearance by Edmundson in the Stanley Cup Finals will be the first for a Brandon native since Bryce Salvador in 2012. Prior to that you’d have to go all the way back to 1990 when Bill Ranford won the championship as the starting goalie for the Edmonton Oilers.
The finals get underway Monday night in Boston.
