As summer reaches its home stretch in late August, folks of all ages will have an opportunity to take in or participate in a unique all-ages event that has promise to bring new meaning to a popular outdoor pastime locally.
JamBiz Entertainment are well into preparations for the first Kite Festival & Family Fun Day, to take place on August 25 at the vast open space that is BYSA Soccer Park.
The day’s main attraction will be a kite flying competition, which will see all-age participants’ home-made kites judged on functionality (must stay in the air for two minutes) and aesthetics. Competition will be in three different age-based categories depending on whether one is aged 6-12, 13-17 or 18+ with there being a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize in each category.
Patrons of all-ages that are attending are also welcome to fly their kite casually at no charge with attendance to the event as a whole also being free. A registration fee, soon to be confirmed, will be required for those that wish to put their best kite forward in the competition.
According to organizers, kite flying festivals are particularly popular in Jamaica in the summer as an outdoor activity and family bonding opportunity. It’s having had that experience and seeing opportunity for cultural integration amongst Westman’s diverse population that inspired the introduction of a similar concept locally in what's being billed as Brandon's first ever kite festival.
In addition to the centre attraction kite-related festivities, the day will feature fun family-oriented activities including a kids play area, face painting and a barbecue. There will also be on-site sale of kites and kite accessories.
More information can be found at this link, the same link where pre-registration will soon be available. Registrations will also be accepted at upcoming popup kite flying days or as walkups at the August 25 event.
