What appears to be the beginnings of construction work has been visibly underway in recent weeks on Waywayseecappo First Nation land in the R.M. of Elton just North of the city off of highway ten.
Though information is not available as of the time of this posting on the exact nature of what is being constructed, the area of work has what to the eye appears to be a meaningful footprint. In a story in today’s Brandon Sun, R.M. of Elton Reeve Ross Farley states that at one time the plan was for construction of a gas bar and convenience store.
The same story cites a 2017 agreement between the R.M. and Waywayseecappo in describing permitted use of the land being a convenience store, service station, truck stop, local government offices, restaurants and/or a gaming facility. The R.M. would provide municipal services in exchange for a fee tantamount to property tax. The process is currently underway to obtain reserve status for the land.
The space being developed would be considered well-located, being the first of any of the above types of businesses/organizations one would encounter when entering Brandon from Highway 10 North of the city as well as the first for folks arriving via the airport.
