Police report 5% year-on-year drop in offences in first half of 2019

This past month’s Brandon Police Service crime statistics have been released with June showing the continuation of a trend of a year-on-year reduction in overall criminal code offenses.

The month saw 622 criminal code violations recorded, a reduction of 6% when compared to June of 2018.

With 2019 half complete as a calendar year, overall offences on the year have totalled 3171 compared to 3328 last year or a reduction of 5%. When breaking the first six months of the year down further, included in that number is a 13% drop in crimes against person and a 22% drop in the “other criminal codes” category. There was a 6% rise in Crimes Against Property and a 2% rise Controlled Drug category. Of note, 10 of this year’s 28 in the Trafficking of Drugs sub-category all took place in June.

It’s worth noting that June was the first full month since Brandon joined the Project 529 bike registration service. Though when it comes to statistics small sample spaces are best taken with somewhat of a grain of salt, it was encouraging to learn that reported bicycle thefts in June of this year were down to just 24 in comparison to 58 last year in the same month. A total of 852 bikes have been registered in the system to date.
