New sites to expand capacity for local Bell MTS, Rogers users

Posted by Adam in Local News, 8/1/2019

Bell MTS has confirmed that a new cell phone tower being constructed in Brandon’s South End is theirs as part of ongoing upgrades to their network in the Brandon area.

The topic was raised in an eBrandon discussion thread earlier this week where members noted the structure being erected in the vicinity of 13th Street and Aberdeen Avenue (pictured), unknowing of which carrier was constructing it.

According to a representative of Bell MTS the tower is one of two new sites being added this summer as part of improving LTE-A coverage and increasing network capacity in their respective areas of Brandon. A second, making use of the rooftop at 35 Victoria Ave East at the location of Westman Lions Manor, is also in the process of implementation. Both are expected to come into service later this month.

Via a representative of Rogers Communications, under the terms of a province-wide network sharing agreement between Rogers and Bell MTS the network additions would apply to Rogers customers as well.

Discussion in the attached discussion thread pointed to poor LTE signals on the network in the Southern part of the city. It stands to reason that the new tower in that portion of the city may work towards alleviating some of those concerns.

LTE-A, or LTE-Advanced, technology was first launched on the shared network in the Brandon in late 2017.
