Snow day! Warning ended, snow continues in Brandon on Saturday

Posted by Adam in Local Weather, 10/12/2019

The worst appears to have passed for a winter storm that’s been pounding Brandon with heavy snow since Friday, though snow and still quite-high winds are expected throughout the day on Saturday.

The City had been under a Winter Storm Warning from Thursday into Saturday morning, though after conditions had improved sufficiently by just after 10am to the point of dropping said warning. Other warnings had remained for points further West as of the time of this posting. For most current weather alerts for Manitoba, please click here.

The hourly forecast for Brandon as of the time of this posting calls for snow on Saturday through to the 5pm hour before minimizing to a few flurries overnight into Sunday. 2 4cm of snow are forecast over the remainder of the day alongside greatly diminished winds of 30km/hour gusting to 50km/hr. For the most current forecast for the city please visit this link.

A wide swath of highways are closed in the area including the Trans Canada West to Griswold and East to Headingley and Highway 10 South to the USA border as of post time. As conditions can change rapidly please check http://www.manitoba511.ca for most current info.

In contrast to effects seen at points East, local effects to the power grid have been minimal thus far with no outages in the city as of the time of this posting. Should that change, outages can be monitored or reported via Manitoba Hydro at this link

According to Environment Canada data, 20.6cm of snow fell on Friday obliterating the previous October 11 record of 1cm. I don’t think I’m going too far out in a limb to suggest that October 12’s record of 1.3cm is well into the process of being rewritten as well.

In the bigger picture, Environment Canada is reporting widespread accumulations of 40-60cm from this system.. a range it seems Brandon will move very close to by the time all is said and done.

Ongoing updates and discussion can be found in the eBrandon discussion on the storm at this link

A separate discussion has been started to note closures and cancellations at this link

And last but not least, for folks in need of a hand with driveway and sidewalk clearing a handful of new ads have popped up in the Snow Clearing classified category. You can browse those ads here.

Be safe folks!

Updated: 10:25am. Reflected dropped storm warning
