Brandon-born defenceman is coming home after WHL Wheat Kings trade

Posted by Adam in Local Sports, 12/4/2019

A long history of the Wheat Kings building a roster that includes local players continued today with news that the WHL club has traded for Brandon-born defenceman Rylan Thiessen.

On a team that also featured current WHL Wheat King Nolan Ritchie, Thiessen was a key contributor to this past season’s Provincial champion AAA U18 championship won by the AAA U18 Wheat Kings. During the team’s playoff run the 18-year old Brandonite netted five goals and 19 points in just eleven games and playoff MVP honours.

In exchange for Thiessen, the Wheat Kings have sent the Lethbridge Hurricanes a 6th round draft pick in this spring’s WHL draft. To-date in his rookie WHL season he has three assists in 22 games.

In addition to Ritchie, Thiessen joins local products Ty Thorpe, Connor Gutenberg and Lynden McCallum as well as Ben McCartney (Macdonald), Chad Nychuk (Rossburn), Jonny Lambos (Winnipeg), Jonny Hooker (Winnipeg) and Marcus Sekundiak (Oak Bluff) as Manitoba-born Wheat Kings.

In a press release announcing the trade this afternoon, the Wheat Kings have indicated that Thiessen is expected to be in the team’s lineup for this Friday’s home game against the Kamloops Blazers.
