The Brandon Police Service issued a note of caution today about a new observed local trend in fraudulent phone calls where callers are now falsely pretending to represent Brandon Police.
According a media release on Friday morning, BPS say that callers attempt to appear legitimate by having the actual Brandon Police phone number show on oneâs call display when receiving the call. In receiving calls some have been threatened with arrest warrants should they not meet financial demands.
In today's release, Brandon Police have made clear that the Service does not collect money for taxes, court fees or fines. If receiving such a call and being threatened with arrest if not providing funds or personal information, it is advised to hang up.
Similar calls have been ongoing for several years where fraudsters pretend to be government agencies. Reports that Police are among the agencies that fraudsters are pretending to be have begun to be received over the past week.
Anyone that is a victim is asked to make a report with Police by calling 204.729.2345.
